Practicing dentistry for more than 25 years, Dr. Alan D. Yount has the knowledge and skill that only an experienced family dentist can provide. A caring, dedicated professional who has been serving the residents of Alabama for more than two decades, he has helped over 10,000 people have healthy, attractive smiles by providing the comprehensive, top-quality dental care you and your family deserve.
Dr. Yount says, “I have always enjoyed working with my hands, and dentistry is about as hands-on as it gets! The added plus is being around patients and the joy we all receive helping others.” The doctor thrives on the artistic and engineering challenges of crafting beautiful crowns, bridges, and dentures while maintaining the patient’s optimal occlusion, or bite.
With his optimistic, fun-loving personality, Dr. Yount keeps patients’ spirits up during appointments. His treatment philosophy is straightforward:
“I absolutely do not tell a patient exactly which treatment plan they should do. I like giving patients treatment alternatives after taking photographs and showing them their problem areas. It is important to understand that no one can restore teeth that will never have problems again. We are only imitators of the Master, and our very best falls far short. However, dentistry continues to evolve, and the materials and procedures we enjoy now are unbelievable compared to just 25 years ago. This is great news for patients.”
Education
Dr. Yount graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a B.S. in biology and a minor in chemistry, with undeclared minors in accounting and English. He continued his education at the University of Alabama School of Dentistry, where he earned a DMD. He has undertaken continuing education at the Center for Advanced Dental Studies, The Dawson Academy, and through Dawson study clubs. He is also a member of the Academy of General Dentistry.
Dr. Yount was an Army Dental Officer and is one of few dentists who has seen combat. He says, “I even captured five enemy soldiers and met the Syrian army in the middle of a very dark night under less than optimal circumstances.”
Personal Life
Dr. Yount has been married for 38 years to his wife, Cynthia. They have two children who are both grown up and married, and they have two grandchildren. Cynthia is a B.S. R.N. and former Director of Nursing at two major area nursing homes. She’s an animal lover who has brought two cats and two dogs into the family, as well as many other animals over the years.
Dr. Yount has had a rich life full of diverse experiences, giving him a depth of understanding and compassion that his patients appreciate.
He says of his childhood: “I grew up in the Ozark mountains of Missouri on an over 1,000-acre cattle farm as an only child. My father worked for a mining company, was an Air Force reservist, and loved being an auctioneer. My mother taught school ranging from fourth grade to special programs. I worked hard nearly every day, made adult decisions on all kinds of subjects, and received a long list of chores from my father every day. That list involved quick jobs, medium tough jobs, difficult jobs, and even two-man jobs. That gave me organization skills that I use even today. In my spare time, I would hunt, play various sports, fish with my grandmother, golf, and generally do everything a country boy would do.”
Over the years, Dr. Yount has watched Auburn grow from the small, lovely village on the plains it was when he moved here in 1991. He says, “There are few places better to raise a family and give them infinite opportunities while being close to a major airport, the beach, and the mountains!”
