Dental implants are usually the best way to restore lost teeth. They feel and function like your natural teeth. And they can be used to anchor a full set of dentures. But they are not always economically possible. If you need dentures but cannot afford full-sized implants or are concerned about the bone loss and other problems associated with removable dentures, mini implants may provide a solution.
The Advantages of Mini Implants
Mini implants are much narrower than regular implants. Because of this, the surgical process needed to place them is much less complex, making it less expensive. This also means that the surgery will be less traumatic and will involve less risk. And the associated healing time is shorter. The drawing to the left shows the difference between a regular and a mini implant.
Mini implants have some of the advantages of full-size implants. The dentures won’t move around or slip and fall out, and they will prevent the bone loss that, if left unchecked, causes facial collapse. Click here to read more about facial collapse.
Disadvantages of Mini Implants
Because mini implants are so much narrower than regular implants, they offer less strength. They are not strong enough to support a crown and only work well for stabilizing dentures. In addition, they will not feel like a full-size implant in your mouth. They will feel a bit less natural and stable.
