Lumineers are a brand of ultra-thin porcelain veneers that are made by DenMat. More people than ever before are aware of porcelain veneers because of DenMat marketing. But along with the marketing campaign has come a bit of confusion.
Lumineers and other Ultra-Thin Brands
Ultra-thin porcelain veneers are about .2mm thinner than veneers made in the traditional way. They can be thinner because they are stronger. There are several companies that make ultra-thin veneers. Most of them let dentists work with their own master ceramists to imbue the porcelain with the kind of color variation and sparkle found in natural teeth.
Lumineers, on the other hand, have to be made at DenMat’s laboratories by DenMat ceramists. And many cosmetic dentists feel that the resulting veneers are too bulky, monochromatic, and opaque.
Tooth Preparation
One of the advantages advertised for Lumineers is that they can be placed without any tooth preparation. And in some situations, with the right cosmetic dentist and the right ceramist, the no-prep technique can have beautiful results. Dr. Murphree uses the technique when it is appropriate.
Your Smile Makeover Choice
It is more important to choose a highly qualified cosmetic dentist than to choose a brand of porcelain veneers. Lumineers are not just heavily advertised to the public. They are also heavily advertised to general dentists as an easy process that doesn’t require extensive post-graduate training in advanced cosmetic dentistry.
Dr. Murphree has this training. More importantly, his porcelain veneer smile makeovers have been recognized with gold medals by his peers in the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry in that organization’s International Smile Gallery competitions.
